The University of St. Andrews Under Fire For Hiring NT Wright

The Scottish Sun has the report-

A FURIOUS clergyman has slammed Scotland’s oldest uni for giving a top professor role to an “anti-gay” bishop. Bishop of Durham Dr Tom Wright, who famously opposed the ordination of gay churchmen, starts his post at St Andrews’ School of Divinity in September. But openly gay Rt Rev Kelvin Holdsworth, Provost of St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow, angrily condemned the move. The St Andrews graduate even vowed to boycott giving funding to the uni – and wants others to follow.

Well this really puts me betwixt and between. On the one hand– gay clergy… yuck. On the other, NT Wright…. yuck…

I’m not sure what to do. Applaud St. Andrews or not… Oh what a choice to make…  Anyways- it’s an ‘accredited’ University so they did the right thing.  Obviously.

  1. I’m sure the university will miss his hundred or so pounds each year! I just love a good fundamentalist liberal!

  2. or a fundalib. or a libfund

  3. Well the issue is hardly Tom Wright, but he simply stands upon the classic biblical reality of God’s creational difference of man and woman. (Gen. 2:18-24; chap. 3 / 1 Tim. 2: 13-15 ; etc.) And 1 Cor. 11: 3-16 also, note verses 7-8 & 9. This is hardly proof texting, as hearing what God’s word says about the creational nature of man and woman, in both the OT and the New. The simple truth of the matter is that the so-called modern Church is departing from the word & revelation of God on creational and sexual ethics! We would call this “nature” or the “natural” also. (See also Rom. 1: 18-32)

  4. Gee, I wonder what my definition would be? I hope a conservative “biblicist”, but within part of the historical Church. Say let’s define ourselves “theologically”? lol What are you Jim?

  5. me? i’m a zwinglian semi calvinist minimalist with a dash of bultmannianism and von radism.

  6. Oh sorry, I am not staying literally on subject line. Joel & Steph will get me! Its my old age, I drift.. lol.

  7. @Jim,

Nice you put Zwingli first! I mean that too. Mine would be “catholic & reformed”, but within the conservative “biblicist” line of course. Okay, so I am a “fundamentalist” lol. But an old Anglican one!

  8. I love this Bultmannian quote by John A. T. Robinson: ‘New Testament and Mythology’ … when he spoke of the ‘mythological element in the NT he was really referring to all language which seeks to characterise the Gospel history as more than bare history like any other history … unintelligible jargon … the mythological language of pre-existence, incarnation, ascent and descent, miraculous intervention. cosmic conception of a supernatural order which invades and ‘perforates’..etc.”

Gee sounds “mystical” to me, and ends in “belief” simply somehow.

  9. dont read about bultmann. read bultmann.

  10. Bultmann is my next challenge, after Torrance.

  11. @Jim,
Yes, I have, and have some of his works. As I have said, his stance on the historical “Death” of Christ is simply profound! But he misses the “fundamental” ground of biblical epistemology in my regard. But he was a great “Christian” thinker for sure!

  12. @Jim,
BTW, I am reading John A.T. Robinson’s book: Redating the New Testament. Simply profound and unassailable to my mind! Check ‘me wee little blog’, if you care?
