Draw Muhammed Day

Welcome to Draw Mohammed Day.  As James tells us

In response to threats and acts of violence by extremists, a movement has gotten underway which has led to a number of “draw Muhammad” events, and eventually the culminating “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day” which has been designated as today, May 20th, 2010.

James includes a very nice artistic piece.  For my part, I’m going to do my own original drawing:

Happy Draw Muhammed Day!

And if you don’t like my paltry artistic abilities, you might like this better (via Jona Lendering in a comment to James’ post above.

As Jona remarks, that’s meant to be an actual portrait of Muhammed, by a Muslim artist.

  2. There’s plenty of beautiful Islamic art depicting Mohammed. I’m all for peaceful protest against violent threats against extremists but I think mockery is not helpful and just reminds me of the Center for Inquiry’s similar ridiculous competition a couple of weeks ago – an example of their sophomoronic approach to religions generally. So who are the creaters of this so called competition? The link on both your blog and James’ don’t work.

  3. sometimes mockery is the best methodology.

as to the link, it worked this morning. maybe it’s being bombarded.

  4. I prefer to leave mockery to the ‘mythers’ and the new atheists. They’re really good at it. Think they’re really clever and funny too.

  5. mockery has a good long line of respectable purveyors including augustine, origen, Jesus (!), Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, Barth, Bultmann, and me. ;-)

(what company i put myself in, huh…)

  6. btw – who were the organisers of the bombarded competition?

  7. I was sort of wondering if it had anything to do with Lindsay and the CFI…

  8. didnt pay any attention

  9. From your list I think it’s only Bultmann’s scholarship I would hold in high regard. Can’t recall him mocking in this way though.

  10. I’m not sure the church fathers’ mockery ever achieved anything positive.

  11. mockery needn’t achieve anything to be fun.

  12. he could be as cutting in a review and mocking as james barr.

  13. critical reviews however severe, aren’t mocking unless they’re bad reviewers. The only mocking reviews I’ve ever read have been by ‘mythers’ and ‘new atheists’ where they misrepresent and distort their subject in order to ridicule.

  14. ‘positive’ is not the same thing as ‘fun’. They never achieved anything positive from their mockery. I’m sure alot of their sympathetic like minded readers found their mockery fun but that’s not a positive result of mockery. :-)

  15. i am forced to presume that you’ve never read one of james barr’s reviews. he could, and did, mock. with excellence.

  16. don’t presume anything – myther territory. Barr can be severely sardonic about those whose lack of learning is blatant. It’s not provoking a violent backlash and it’s not actually one of the more helpful aspects of his reviews. It’s easy to point things out and be critical without resorting to mockery.

  17. looks like we’re gonna have to disagree about the usefulness of mockery. at least we agree about tea.

  18. We do indeed, and I’ll have to make you some next time. I had a really nice one on the american airlines. Actually it wasn’t – it was disgusting on the plane because the water wasn’t boiled. But the hostess gave me a whole lot to take home. Unfortunately the man sitting next to me, who was the CEO of American Foods (I had been upgraded with James to first class), told me that it was made by Starbucks!! Almost put me off … but it was sooo delicious. Liquorice, orange and ginger main ingredients and perfect blend of each. I wish I could get it here – you probably can get it over there though.

  19. tell me the name and i’ll track it down and send you some.

  20. Thank you:-) !! It was just called Liquorice Tea I think but I can’t botherations remember if it had any other name now! Each bag was in an individual little packet – bright beautiful orange. And it’s supposed to be made by Starbucks – although that name didn’t appear on the individual wrappers it might on the boxes of bags. I have just remembered too that it didn’t come on the plane – the hostess just gave me luke warm water to put it in. I got them at the hotel – was it the Hyatt? They were in our rooms with the tea and coffee making facilities. It was the cleaner who gave me a whole lot… Do you remember them in your room (or did Chris steal them all!!)?

  21. was it tazo wild sweet orange by chance, in an orange wrapper?
