The Worst Paying College Degree

I was unsurprised to see ‘Religion Major’ on the list of worst paying college degrees and yet I would contend that those with that degree (and the usually following Master of Divinity degree and its brethren) are the lowest paid of the lot (in spite of claims to the contrary).

The only people in ministry who make real money are mega church pastors- and they’re – by and large- heretics. So heresy pays, theology doesn’t.

  1. Yes, amen to this. It is even worse in the UK. Sometimes there only the nuts and liberals go to seminary now.

  2. As someone who left a high paid IT career, no one ever claim I’ve done any of this for the money.

  3. Frank,

Forgive me, but that sounds a bit self-righteous! lol I am kidding mate, not personal. Just like my being a RMC, and Jim an Army MP. Just part of God’s sovereign providence in our lives, if were “elect” according to grace?

  4. yes, the master of divinity is most often inversely proportional to income increase.

  5. maybe it’s because alot of students study religion for interest for how other cultures live and what they believe. I don’t know anyone who has majored in religion who has gone into the church. They either have academic careers or have moved into completely different fields where their increased understanding of other cultures may or may not be directly relevant. People who do theology, and therefore Christianity. When I read this post I thought it was about religion. I was surprised because I wouldn’t have thought it had any less lucrative prospects than majoring in English or Art History for example.

  6. oh I see it doesn’t. Hospitality and Tourism? A degree?! Well other than horticulture I think they were all arts and humanities degrees and we knew the arts as a whole didn’t pay well already didn’t we. If you want to make money you take sciences, but we knew that already.

The churches that I have either been a member of or just attended, have really tried to give the pastor and staff a decent compensation. But it is still less than average wage across the state. My current church pays its pastor and staff fairly well, they want to keep them and not have them worrying about paying bills, but it still can’t be easy on that salary. On the other hand, an English or Art major don’t exactly pay very well either.

  8. no real pastor is in it for the money. can that be said of any other profession? even the head of the red cross hauls down hundreds of thousands.

  9. Amen Jim, I have never lived off Church pay alone that’s for sure. I am blessed to have a few pounds or bucks..passed down in the family. And a wee military pension.

  10. no half decent person is in anything for the money. Filthy dirty lucre!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. well of course that means no wall streeters, bankers, doctors, lawyers, or grocery store clerks are half decent.

  12. grocery store clerks aren’t in it for the money. They’re in it to pay the rent and survive. Alot of doctors and some lawyers aren’t in it for the money either. They’re in it to help people.
